Rationale and Purpose of the Module:
To explain to students how distance education and e-learning evolved.
To describe the various convergences and divergences in distance and conventional education.
To explain the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats facing distance education and how the strengths and opportunities can be maximised.
To introduce students to the various types of systems that can be used for teaching online.
To introduce students to the five stage model of teaching and learning online and how the e-moderator can facilitate students' progression through the model.
To provide instruction on the different types of interaction and assessment activities and can they can be used effectively.
Syllabus:
Trends and issues in distance education and e-learning; the depth education model; considerations and procedures for using/ implementing virtual classrooms, web-based instructional systems, learning management systems, distributed learning programs/ systems, and learner support systems; e-moderating and mentoring; interaction and assessment activities; evaluation of distance education and e-learning programmes.

On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
*Explain how distance education and e-learning evolved.
*Describe convergences and divergences in distance and conventional education.
*Describe emerging discourses on flexible learning, and how its introduction has implications for academic practice.
*Describe different types of online teaching systems.
*Describe the five-stage model of teaching and learning online and the role of the e-moderator in the five-stage model.
*Describe different forms of interaction and assessment activities.
*Describe various issues and criteria that should be considered when evaluating the success of e-learning programmes.
Affective (Attitudes and Values)
On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
*Behave in an ethical manner when participating in online discussions.
*Choose the most appropriate interaction and assessment activities, when designing and developing an e-learning.
On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
*Submit a number of module deliverables within a short timeframe, thereby demonstrating good project management skills.
*Participate in an online collaborative environment.

How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:
The on-campus version of the module will consist of one double lecture and one tutorial per week. The off-campus (distance learning) version will consist of online lectures and tutorials (students will download audio recordings and slides from the web). In addition, the on-campus students will collaborate online with the off-campus students in online discussions and to share learning resources. There will be 100% continuous assessment in both versions (no end-of-semester examination).
The module incorporates graduate attributes by building knowldge, promoting collaboration, encouraging students to interact articulately in a digital environment.
